Brussels, Belgium – The European Council (EU) has formally requested an extraordinary summit of European Union leaders to take place in the coming days. The decision follows a critical meeting of EU ambassadors in Brussels aimed at addressing recent geopolitical developments and growing tensions surrounding Greenland. Antonio Costa, President of the European Council, emphasised the necessity for enhanced coordination among member states to safeguard regional interests and maintain diplomatic stability.

A primary concern for the European Union is the potential imposition of tariffs, which officials believe could significantly undermine transatlantic relations. EU leaders have argued that such economic measures would contravene existing trade agreements between the European Union and the United States. While expressing a commitment to constructive engagement with American counterparts on shared interests, the Council stated its readiness to defend the Union against any form of economic coercion.

During consultations, the European Council reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to international law, national sovereignty, and territorial integrity. There is a unified European stance in support of Denmark and Greenland, with a clear focus on protecting strategic economic and security interests. Furthermore, EU leaders highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and security in the Arctic region, particularly through continued collaboration within the framework of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).
