Mexico – Mexican security forces have killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, the infamous leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) known as ‘El Mencho’, during a high-stakes military raid on Sunday. The operation, which took place in the western state of Jalisco, marks a significant turning point in the country’s long-standing conflict with organised crime.

According to the Mexican Ministry of Defence, the drug kingpin was seriously injured during a shootout with special forces in the town of Tapalpa. He subsequently passed away while being transported by air to Mexico City for medical treatment. The operation was supported by intelligence provided by United States authorities, although the Mexican government has stressed that the mission was planned and executed entirely by its own military personnel.

The death of Oseguera Cervantes, who had a $15mn bounty on his head, triggered an immediate and violent backlash across several states. Cartel members reportedly torched vehicles, blocked major highways, and attacked security outposts in retaliation. In response to the unrest, authorities suspended classes in parts of Jalisco and urged residents to remain indoors, while several international airlines cancelled flights to the region.

United States officials have described the successful operation as a major victory for both nations, particularly following increased pressure from the Trump administration on the Mexican government to escalate its crackdown on drug trafficking. While the removal of the CJNG leader is a significant achievement, security experts warn that it may lead to further instability and internal power struggles within the cartel’s hierarchy.
