Muscat –  Oman will host the third edition of the International Sand Drag Race from January 15 to 17, 2026, reinforcing the Sultanate’s growing reputation as a regional hub for motorsports, adventure tourism and specialised sporting events rooted in its unique desert landscape.

The championship, officially known as the Khabbat Al Qada’an International Sand Drag Race, is organised by the Omani Club of 4×4 Teams in cooperation with the Office of the Governor of South Batinah and the Oman Automobile Association. The event is expected to attract a strong field of competitors from Oman and abroad, alongside large crowds of motorsports enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

Beyond its competitive appeal, organisers say the event plays an important role in promoting sports tourism, showcasing Oman’s natural terrain as an ideal setting for desert-based motorsports while supporting national efforts to diversify tourism offerings beyond traditional cultural and heritage attractions.

Officials note that sand drag racing reflects the country’s environment and outdoor lifestyle, making it a natural fit for Oman’s broader tourism and sports development strategies. The championship also aligns with initiatives aimed at expanding community participation in sport and encouraging youth engagement in professional competitions.

Dr Issam Albarram

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Dr Issam Albarram, chairman of the Omani Club of 4×4 Teams, said the third edition marks a qualitative step forward in terms of organisation, technical standards and international participation.

“This championship has grown steadily with each edition,” he said. “It provides an opportunity to demonstrate Oman’s capability to host international motorsports events in line with recognised safety and organisational standards, while encouraging young Omanis to pursue off-road racing in a structured and professional environment.”

The competition will feature multiple categories designed to attract both experienced drivers and emerging talent. In the Open Category, winner will receive RO4,000, while runner-up will get RO2,000.  Third-place finisher will get RO1,000, fourth-place finisher will get RO500 and fifth-place finisher will get RO350.

Additional categories include Stock 6-Cylinder Body Open, Stock 8-Cylinder Body Open, Light Body 6-Cylinder, 8-Cylinder Stock Body, as well as 2-stroke and 4-stroke ATV classes. Prize money across categories ranges from RO100 to RO3,500, a factor organisers believe will help broaden participation and raise competitive standards.

Safety and technical compliance will remain a top priority throughout the event. Qualified officials, marshals and technical inspectors will oversee all races to ensure adherence to  international best practices.

The championship is expected to generate economic benefits for South Batinah, with increased demand for accommodation, transport and local tourism activities during the three-day event. ” Building on the success of previous editions, the third South Batinah International 4×4 Sand Drag Race is set to strengthen Oman’s presence on the regional motorsports calendar, while positioning the Sultanate as a destination where sport, tourism and nature come together, ” said Issam.
