Newyork – United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting on Monday to address the recent military operation conducted by the United States in Venezuela. The intervention resulted in the detention of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife in the capital, Caracas.

Khadija Ahmed, spokesperson for Somalia’s permanent mission to the UN, confirmed that the session was arranged under Somalia’s current presidency of the Council for January. The request for the urgent gathering was initiated by Venezuela and formally presented by Colombia, a non-permanent member of the Council. This diplomatic move follows a surge in regional and global tensions triggered by the sudden American military manoeuvre, which has prompted widespread international reactions and calls for diplomatic scrutiny.
