USA – United States President Donald Trump has confirmed his indirect involvement in the upcoming nuclear negotiations with Iran, scheduled to commence in Geneva on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters whilst en route to Washington, the President expressed a cautious but critical outlook on the proceedings, which are being facilitated through Omani mediation.
The President characterised the Iranian representatives as “very tough” but ultimately labelled them “bad negotiators”. He argued that the current diplomatic impasse and the subsequent military escalations could have been avoided had Tehran been more cooperative in previous engagements. Trump noted that a more reasonable approach from Iran might have precluded the necessity of deploying B-2 stealth bombers to strike Iranian nuclear infrastructure during the significant military escalation observed in June 2025.
Despite his sharp critique of their negotiating style, President Trump suggested that Tehran is now motivated to reach an agreement. He stated his belief that the Iranian leadership wishes to avoid the severe consequences of a failed diplomatic process. The talks in Geneva follow a previous round of indirect diplomacy held in Muscat earlier this month, which marked the first significant contact since the suspension of dialogue following the regional conflict last year.
Central to the negotiations remains the contentious issue of uranium enrichment. Tehran continues to demand the comprehensive lifting of Western economic sanctions, while Washington insists on a total cessation of enrichment activities and the transfer of highly enriched uranium stockpiles abroad. The US administration further intends to broaden the scope of the dialogue to include Iran’s ballistic missile programme and its regional influence, though Tehran has consistently maintained that discussions must be limited strictly to nuclear matters.
