Doomsday clock moved to 85 seconds to midnight as global risks intensify

Washington, USA – The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has adjusted the hands of the Doomsday Clock to 85 seconds to midnight, representing the most precarious position for humanity since the symbolic timepiece was established in 1947. This adjustment of four seconds closer to global catastrophe reflects an alarming escalation in nuclear tensions, the worsening climate crisis, and the emergence of disruptive technologies.

The primary driver for this shift is the erosion of international security norms. Ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East have significantly heightened the risk of tactical nuclear weapon use. Furthermore, the absence of substantive dialogue between major global powers, including the United States, Russia, and China, has sparked a multipolar arms race devoid of traditional safeguards.

Environmental concerns also remain a critical factor in the decision. Following 2025’s status as the hottest year on record, scientists expressed grave concern over rising carbon emissions and continued investment in fossil fuel infrastructure. These ecological pressures are now viewed as a threat to human survival comparable in scale to nuclear warfare.

In addition to traditional threats, the Bulletin highlighted the dangers posed by the integration of artificial intelligence into nuclear command systems and the potential for laboratory-enhanced pathogens. The lack of adequate regulation for these rapidly advancing technologies has contributed to the assessment that the world has reached a terminal phase in international diplomacy.
