MUSCAT : Skywatchers across Oman are set for a celestial spectacle as the Quadrantids meteor shower reaches its peak from Saturday evening through the early hours of Sunday, offering one of the most intense meteor displays of the year.
The annual phenomenon, known for its short but powerful peak, is expected to produce dozens of meteors per hour under clear and dark-sky conditions. Astronomers say the shower’s peak coincides with the beginning of the New Year, making it a notable event for both astronomy enthusiasts and casual observers.
The Quadrantids originate from debris left behind by a near-Earth asteroid and are characterised by bright, fast-moving meteors that often leave vivid trails across the night sky. Visibility is expected to improve after midnight and before dawn, when skies are darkest and meteor activity is at its highest.
Authorities and astronomy groups advise observers to move away from city lights, allow their eyes time to adjust to the darkness, and observe with the naked eye for the best viewing experience.
The meteor shower will be visible across much of the Northern Hemisphere, with Oman among the regions well positioned to enjoy the peak display, weather permitting.
