Muscat – Oman Historical Society released a book titled The History of Oman and its Military Heritage on Monday in cooperation with the National Museum. The book documents the sultanate’s military history from the 4th millennium BC to the present era under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik.

Written by researcher Faleh bin Saif al Maamari, the book was released under the patronage of Ibrahim bin Said al Kharousi, Undersecretary for Heritage in the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

The book examines military heritage within the broader framework of Omani history, reviewing the evolution of warfare, weapons, armies and fortifications, as well as tactics and strategies used across different periods. It is based on archaeological findings, rock inscriptions, manuscripts and historical records, along with Omani, Arab and foreign sources.

Sayyid Noah bin Mohammed al Busaidi, Member of the State Council and Chairman of the Oman Historical Society, said the sultanate is witnessing renewed cultural activity driven by national institutions and individual initiatives. He described the book as a contribution to the Arabic library and a result of long-term scholarly effort.

Maamari informed that the book is divided into nine chapters covering key historical periods, major events, figures, fortifications and weapons, as well as defence methods adopted throughout Oman’s history. The work traces developments from ancient times through the rise of the Al Busaidi dynasty to the present.

He said the book was the outcome of years of research and documentation aimed at recording an important aspect of Oman’s history and preserving national heritage.

The book release reflects ongoing efforts by the society and the National Museum to document national history, preserve cultural memory and promote awareness of military heritage as part of Omani identity.
