Muscat – Khoula Hospital is significantly strengthening its position as a leading reference centre for neurosurgery through the adoption of advanced medical practices and diagnostic technologies. This initiative is part of a broader strategic effort by the Ministry of Health to localise epilepsy and functional neurosurgeries within the Sultanate of Oman, thereby reducing the need for patients to seek specialised treatment abroad.
Dr Ahmed Al Azri, Senior Consultant and Head of the Neurosurgery Department at Khoula Hospital, stated that the programme focuses on developing infrastructure and providing sophisticated medical equipment. He highlighted that the initiative also involves the intensive training of national medical staff in neurology, neurophysiology, and neuro-mapping to ensure the delivery of precise, integrated care following international protocols.
The hospital has successfully enhanced its diagnostic capabilities to identify seizure foci with high precision in complex cases. This progress has been achieved through collaboration with specialist medical teams from Saudi Arabia and support from both government and private institutions. Future plans include expanding the use of long-term video monitoring, functional MRI, and nuclear medicine to further improve surgical outcomes and patient experiences.
