MUSCAT – These projects are part of the Ministry’s efforts to develop fishing ports across the various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. This initiative aims to create an attractive investment environment and maximize the utilization of fish resources, while providing a suite of public and private services within the ports to increase the fisheries sector’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Eng. Abdulnasser Aubad Ghawas, Director of the Fisheries Department, told Oman News Agency (ONA) that the Ministry is continuing the implementation of the two fishing harbour projects in the Wilayat of Sadah. He noted that the completion rate for the Hasik harbour has reached 34 percent, while the project in the Hadbeen area has reached 50 percent completion.
He explained that each project includes the construction of breakwaters and floating piers, in addition to the preparation of basic infrastructure such as internal roads and lighting, and the establishment of necessary public facilities to serve fishermen.
Regarding future plans for the fisheries sector in Dhofar Governorate, Eng. Abdulnasser pointed out four upcoming projects within the Ministry’s priority matrix. These include the development of the fishing port in the Wilayat of Mirbat, and the construction of three fishing ports in the center of the Wilayat of Sadah, the Wilayat of Rakhyut, and A’Shuwaymiyah in the Wilayat of Shalim and Al Hallaniyat Islands.
It is worth noting that fishing ports are a fundamental pillar of the fisheries sector and its associated activities. They contribute to the social and economic development of coastal wilayats and enhance the sector’s contribution to the GDP by accommodating increased catch volumes, providing necessary facilities, and enabling the use of modern fishing gear. Furthermore, they offer investment opportunities in port services, fulfill requirements for landing, marketing, and handling operations, and provide maintenance services for ships and boats.
