MUSCAT : A total of 725 detainees across Oman have been released during the first two weeks of Ramadan as part of the 13th edition of the Fak Kurba initiative, according to updates released by organisers.

Figures from the campaign show that 397 detainees were released in the first week, followed by 328 additional releases in the second week, bringing the overall total so far to 725 cases across all governorates of the Sultanate.

The humanitarian initiative supports prisoners detained over financial and civil cases by raising funds from the public and charitable organisations to settle outstanding debts, enabling detainees to regain their freedom and reunite with their families.

According to the week-one update, the highest number of releases were recorded in Al Batinah North (115), followed by Muscat (111) and A’Sharqiyah South (98). Other governorates included Al Batinah South (67), Al Dhahirah (31), Al Buraimi (23), Dhofar (17), Al Dakhiliya (14), A’Sharqiyah North (12) and Al Wusta (2).

During the second week of Ramadan, Muscat recorded the highest number of releases with 184 cases, followed by Al Batinah North with 67 cases and Al Dakhiliya with 31 cases. Other governorates included Al Batinah South (23), Dhofar (17), A’Sharqiyah North (12), A’Sharqiyah South (9), Al Buraimi (7), Al Dhahirah (6) and Al Wusta (1).

Organisers said the initiative will continue throughout the remaining weeks of Ramadan, with the aim of helping more detainees who are unable to settle their financial obligations.

The Fak Kurba initiative is implemented through the voluntary efforts of the Omani Lawyers Association, which coordinates with relevant authorities to review cases and facilitate the settlement of debts.

Over the years, the initiative has helped resolve numerous financial cases, bringing joy and relief to many Omani families by enabling detained relatives to return home.
